For a long time I considered myself primarily a 2-Dimensional artist. However, in the past couple of years I have spent more time in the ceramics studio and have also recently discovered a fascination with carving.
Though I previously built 3 dimensional pieces in paper maché a lot of their appeal was in their colorful and detailed surfaces. They were still very much about the painting. In these new pieces the subject matter has stayed very similar but the focus is different. Color has taken a back seat to form. The patterns on my recent pieces have become textural, in many cases not just etched but carved into the partially dry clay.
The Nested series has been my main focus in ceramics during 2018 and 2019. Though the pieces originally included birds that seemed quite contented to stay stationary on their perches as the series continued they began to take flight.
