For a long time I considered myself primarily a 2-Dimensional artist. However, in the past couple of years I have spent more time in the ceramics studio and have also recently discovered a fascination with carving.
Though I previously built 3 dimensional pieces in paper maché a lot of their appeal was in their colorful and detailed surfaces. They were still very much about the painting. In these new pieces the subject matter has stayed very similar but the results are very different. The actual form of these pieces has become as important than as the surface. My most recent pieces have texture not just etched but carved into the clay.
